In this area, just before the Cevennes, where the landscape changes with every turn in the road, where the valleys fade into the distance, leaving a glimpse of the infinity of the Mediterranean and the Cevennes, where the light accentuates the colours and transforms this place into a land of shelter, lies Lédignan, the administrative centre of the canton, with 1,216 inhabitants, part of the district of Ales.
Perched on a hillock (geologically known as the Dôme de Lédignan) which serves as a dividing line in the waters and which, practically, follows the route of the 907 secondary road from Nimes to St Flour, an ancient Roman road. This place has always been situated on a privileged communications route.
Lying at an altitude of 161 metres, the clay-limestone soil, the dry and hot Mediterranean climate and the mild winters, have made Lédignan a paradise of vineyards, which, in former times, were also accompanied by olive trees and mulberry trees.
If it were possible to see our village from the sky, it would look as though it were built around a cross, formed by the 110 main road and the 907 secondary road.
